Far off Falafal

Seeking escape, and taking advantage of one of our last gorgous days of the year weatherwise, we trekked to the Morton Arboretium in Lisle. If you had never been there like us, do go. What a beautiful place, especially in the face of so much horror this week.

And what makes the trip wothwhile? decent chow on the way home. Lombard, along roosevelt, is rather like a suburban version of devon or maybe albany park. mixed within the old country buffets, lone star steak house and such are quite a few "ethnic" resturants. we zeroed in on a place called pita house that radiated that mysterious deliciousness from afar.

our instincts were dead on. for well under $20, we had an combination plate with hummus, baba ganoush, fava bean salad and jerusulum (read plain) salad; a grilled chicken entree (i.e., over rice), a kefta kebab entree and a plate of something we had only heard about through an arab friend, mama ganoush. Mama replaces the eggplant with zuchini. the site of several eggplants grilling clued us in that any ganoush would be good ganoush. bowls of smooth tahini sauce and a very spicy hot sauce were provided as well. Everything was prepared with homestyle skill. The marinated chicken and grilled kefta were examplars of their breed.

on the way out, i saw them preparing several orders of falafal. each ball was being freshly made and fried. they smelled great.

obviously, many of us on the chowboard live no where near pita house in lombard, but the arboretium is well worth the drive. now you have an excuse.
