Fake ‘Gaillard’ stamps on used Copper Cookware!

I took notice of Betsy’s blog entry at Vintage French Copper, last week concerning old copper pans getting a fake stamp placed on them. The stamp, specifically was of the rather prestigious “Gaillard” Paris! I noticed this myself some months ago on an eBay listing that I recognized was an obviously phony. At the time I had to laugh, and I wondered who would buy such a thing for that asking price. I kept seeing it, and found some info from T.J. France’s website about a dubious Gaillard stamp.

I didn’t think much of it and I always look for other characteristics rather than just the stamp name, even though I am just window shopping these days, really just curious of what’s out there. So I didn’t notice the flood of fake stamps put on a variety of pre-existing copper pots and pans. Until Betsy’s blog entry.

Even then I had to think, “was that ridiculous pan I saw on eBay from seller: treasures-from-france ?” Betsy’s site did not come out and say it, but hinted that it may have morphed it’s name...Then her blog just broke loose, with various folks writing in, including the possible offending seller.

Still I had no idea how prevalent this stamp business was until “Alarash” a copper collector and Chowhound member wrote in and named names. Then TJ and Betsy (VFC) contributed more details.
