If my experience this morning is an indication of normal Customer Service, I don't see any hope for this Chain.....because it was an EPIC FAIL!!!
I stayed overnight at my son's house in Woodcliff Lake. Now there are any number of stores nearby to purchase Bagels and Smoked Fish on a Sunday morning, but I decided to travel 20 minutes away and purchase the Bagels at Fair Lawn Hot Bagels on Saddle River Road...and Smoked Fish at Fairway. At 7:15 AM I left the Bagel Shop and arrived at Fairway in Paramus at 7:30 AM. The store opens at 7:AM. After doing a little shopping for some Beefsteak Tomatoes and some Onions in Produce... a fresh Panella Round at the Bakery...I moved on to the Deli department where I saw no less than 3 worker setting up. One worker told me the Deli did not open until 8: AM. I asked him what time it was and he did not know. I walked past the Fish Department, asked him what time it was and he did not know. Next to the Meat Department and the worker told me it was 7:35 AM. I proceeded to the Dairy Section and added 2 Tubs of Cream Cheese(all the items were carried in hand, no basket or cart). I proceeded to the Customer Service area to see if a manager could make a decision and see if someone could accommodate me to complete my shopping list. No manager, but a few cashiers and possibly a Cashier Supervisor. The Supervisor told me they could not help me, but to see *John* in the fish department(one of the workers who did not know the time). I proceeded back to the back of the store to the counter departments and said to *John* ... I apologized for interrupting his morning set-up, but I wanted to get a pound of Belly Lox and a pound of Whitefish Salad... he told me he could not help me, it was a different *Union* and he didn't know how to slice the fish...not a good sign, but he pointed me in the direction of an elderly gentleman standing in front of the Smoked Fish and John told me some mumbo jumbo about * He did not think he was allowed to sell me any fish before 8 AM *...I walked over to the elderly gentleman and asked him if I could get some fish....and he said *No, it was against the rules*, and walked over to another person stocking items in a open refer case, exchanged some words with him and then He walked behind the Smoked Fish counter and handled a pre paper packaged item, presumably smoked fish, looked at me and walked away into the back without saying a word. I walked over to the person who he spoke with and he told me it was against the rules to sell fish before 8 AM. I asked him if they could make an exception, but he said *No*. I asked him what time it was and he told me it was 7:40 AM,...I said to him, if they insisted on not servicing me, my intention was to dump the items I was carrying on an empty Stainless Steel Table and leave....He again said * No *. I then proceeded to drop the items, just as the original Deli worker I encountered from the Deli department walked by and said * Really * ....and I said...*Yes, really. You treat me like Sh*t....and I"ll treat you like Sh*t in return and left the store.( Yes, I know I have NO CLASS.)
Apparently, Fairway doesn't think approximately $55 for Smoked Fish and another $15 for incidentals is worth their time or effort.
I left the store and went to Harold's across the street. There was a worker in front of the store who saw me approach and park the car as he went inside. I looked at the Hours of Operation sign and it indicated they open at 8 AM.....No problem, he simply waived me in. I thanked him and told him about the incident across the street... He said that's ridiculous and told me to go to the back and order the Smoked Fish. He even offered to go downstairs to get me onions and tomatoes,as they were not on display. Now that's good service.
Maybe the higher ups at Fairway should ponder why their store has been unable to close Harold's through competition.
