Fairway Cafe -- Not all it's cracked up to be

Reece | Oct 1, 2003 02:16 PM

Twice now I've gone to Fairway Cafe based on the hype and twice I've been really disappointed. The first time I had the fish & chips. The fish was soggy, there was nothing spectacular about the chips, it was just a really mediocre demonstration of this dish (the entire dish had a general textural unbalancedness on the soggy side). So I thought, well, it's just fish & chips, and it's not even something I particularly like, how much can you really expect (although I've definitely had better...even on the West Coast!), can't judge the place by that. I came back and had the salade nicoise, which even has a little Mitchel London tacked-up sign dedicated to it going on about what an authentic nicoise is. That's all great talk, but the actual salad I got was a far cry from even a typical nicoise -- no haricots verts, no anchovies, only a tiny amount of tuna, but there were yellow peppers and whole radishes (?), all the veggies in a proportion that wasn't thought-out and even with a pretty bland taste. I'm from California, so I'm going to give Mitchel a third strike and then he's out! Will try the steak very soon, if that's not good then this place is just sad.
