This Ethiopian restaurant (Danforth, just west of Coxwell) just opened up so we thought we would give it a try. To be sure, there are many (too many?) Ethiopian restaurants in the neighbourhood and opening up another Ethiopian restaurant seems a bit odd. But, we felt like Ethiopian so we thought we would give it a try. Le Rendezvous gets most of the Ethiopian traffic in the area (and seems to have the best reviews) and it's good, but not amazing. It's better than many of the other places in the area.
We went on a Friday night. We were the only people in the restaurant. It's a relatively small place, with may be 10-15 tables and a bar. The decor is simple and clean, but they are really into coloured lighting and lasers, which is kind of weird and awesome. By the bar there are a couple of TVs playing news and sports. The music was I think Ethiopian adult contemporary. Not awesome, but unobtrusive and thankfully not 80's.
The menu was small - 1 page. We are vegetarian and there were two options - salad and the veggie combo. I almost always get the veggie combo at Ethiopian restaurants so I didn't mind the minimal choice. There were about 8 different non-veg options. The veggie combo was I think the best I've had in this city. There was a large variety and a few dishes I have never had before (a green bean dish which was delish, even though I hate green beans - the sign of an awesome cook). The collard greens were especially good and the lentil dishes also great (but I would probably ask for spicy next time because the default is pretty tame). Every single dish was different in terms of spicing, flavour, and texture. Furthermore, they were all really good. The injera was amazing - soft and a bit more vinegar than most places, which gave it a bit more zing. We left stuffed and the bill came to $28 with tax for food for two and two Heinekens each. Cheap!
One warning though - the server has clearly never served before, and it is unlikely that they have ever been in a restaurant. She was lovely and kind but clearly had no idea what to do. Presumably in a few weeks she'll be a bit more proficient. Since we were the only table, this wasn't a problem.
It's a great restaurant and I hope to see it stay in the neighbourhood!
