Exploring Chestnut Hill/Brighton/Newton

I'm starting a new job at Boston College on Monday, and so I'm anxious to start exploring the chow options in what has been a fairly unexplored area of the city for me. I'm mostly looking for (a) places to grab a quick lunch, and (b) places to go shopping on the way home. I'll be commuting from the Davis Square area each day, which takes me close to Brighton Center.

So, Hounds: what's exciting in Chestnut Hill? What's a short, after-work detour away?

Somewhat relatedly: I'd like to take a friend to Oishii to celebrate the new job. What's the least busy time? I'm happy to tailor my schedule to the restaurant's, at least outside of working hours. (Anyone know how much their omakase runs per person?)
