In this epicurean vortex that is Daytona Beach, a beacon of hope. Based on Chuck's dead-on recommendation, we checked out "Leanh's" on Beville Road....and a terrific meal. Turns out the same family has been running the place for the past 18 years, although the name changed last year when the patriarch passed away.
Just a hole in the wall in an otherwise bleak strip mall, but very clean with charming service from the owners daughters. The grandparents sat eating near the kitchen, eagerly slurping incredible smelling bowls of curry soup and noodles!
They have an extensive Chinese menu, with the standard Cantonese/Szechuan fare, although everything here is done extremely well. But they also have a Vietnamese menu that we are very excited about. We have always loved the brothy stew bases and curries and fresh cilantro, mint and glass noodles.
The summer rolls are made to order...incr"edible" with fresh large local shrimp, pork, mint and celantro and lemon grass..served with peanut sauce and the obligatory spicy spirralla sauce. Wow! Although not on the menu, the daughter suggested we try the rolls with lemon grass grilled chicken next time.
Got a little carried away and ordered more...hey, you want to sieze the moment when you've been deprived!
Got the Bun mi Pho...a magnificent soupy green and yellow curry mix of tender lemon grass grilled chicken, oven roasted potatoes, onions, mint, cilantro and glass noodles. Tears of joy and intense heat, let me tell you!
Also ordered the orange chicken from the Chinese menu. What a treat. Usually soggy and sickly sweet..not here. Chicken was crisp and tender, the fresh orange peels and chunks of orange and scallions in a light sauce. Best I've had....anywhere!
Not especially busy while we were there...about 5 or six tables. Take out business was brisk. I gather they do a a lot of lunch business.
Everything cooked to order; and gracious service like you're not just another goofy customer....but one of the family slurping curry noodles! How refreshing.
Do yourself a favor and check out Leanh's on Beville Road across from the Daytona Beach public golf course.
Thanks again for the excellent tip, Chuck!
