I know many have praised the drink selection at Deep Ellum but been a little shorter with praise for the food. I finally got to the restaurant last night with a friend, sporting a couple of buywithme coupons. The place was very full, but we gave our name to someone in the back and were seated within 10 minutes.
For drinks we had a few each of their great bottle and draught selection. Unfortunately I don't remember the specifics we ordered since I let my DC handle most of the drink selection.
For a starter we split the moules frites. The mussels were deeply flavorful, the frites were just-short-of-perfect crisp and there was a ridiculously awesome aioli on top that burst with lemon, salt, garlic, and creaminess, which was soppable with the pesto-soaked crouton.
For mains, I had their duck confit mac and cheese, and my DC had their daily wurst special. The mac and cheese was creamy but not overly cheesy or salty which was a good thing, and was made with shell pasta. The pieces of duck were strewn throughout generously, and the panko on top was well crisped. The best way to describe it, in its personal cast iron pan, was balanced, and perfectly seasoned. I was doing my best to scrape up every remaining bit of sauce from the dish that I could. The wurst special was a homemade country pork sausage with pine nuts atop a sweet potato hash and topped with a fried egg. The bite I got of the sausage was hot, crispy on the edge, and very bold in its flavors, with a texture that just screamed freshness.
My takeaway was that while the food was great and the drinks incredible, the dark atmosphere and attentive service really made me feel like I was eating somewhere special, not just at the slightly upscale pub for BU kids that it seems to be regarded as. I'll be sure to be back with others!
