This Saturday 4 of us ended up going to NEXT on South St. after Bronzino's neglected to write down our reservation. I believe NEXT has only been open a short while. What a wonderful surprise. The ambiance has a cozy warm feeling. The restaurant is small probably about 15 -18 tables BYO.
We all had appetizers and entrees. Two of us chose a Tuna carpaccio which I think was about $9.00. The tuna was like butter, thin slices enhanced by a dribble of sesame oil, black pepper and wasabi peas. Another appetizer was a duck confit salad roughly 8.00. Unfortunately I only had a nibble but what I tasted was excellent. The 3rd appetizer was a special of Tuna wontons, crisply fried wrappers with cooked tuna inside and a sweet & sour sauce. Clearly the weakest of the 3.
2 of us chose a special of a whole Bronzino. This was one of the best fish I've eaten. It was served whole, deepfried with the backbone and little bones removed. It was perched on top of a tomato vinegerette and served with polenta and broccoli rabe. The whole combination was amazingly good.
Another entree was a grilled salmon on top of roasted sliced fingerling potatoes and a green vegetable. The taste I has was very good but over shadowed by the Bronzino.
The 3rd entree was a Monk Fish Osso Bucco. I did not taste it but the person who wolfed it down said it was excellent but not a large enough portion.
We opted to not have dessert & coffee there choosing to go to Capagiero's.
Our bill came to about $70.00 a couple with TIP which is not cheap but well worth the price given the quality and presentation of the food. We can't wait to go back.
