Excellent Gyro in San Mateo

Zach Georgopoulos | Jun 12, 200205:08 PM

I've been on the lookout for a good gyro since moving back from Greece in '74 -- the kind with the really good, thick pita bread that's lightly grilled and after being brushed with olive oil, tzatziki, tomatoes and cucumber. Nothing more, nothing less. Well, last weekend I was helping Big Ray (a chowhound who simply cannot be coaxed to post) move to a new place in Belmont. After lugging couches and chairs up and down stairs, we figured it was time for a pizza. The Hepcat suggests Rainbow Pizza in San Mateo and proceeds to call. At that point I'd eat cardboard, so I didn't really pay attention to what he was ordering, concentrating instead on my growling stomach and aching muscles. I guess the place is run by Greeks, and in deference to my heritage he orders the Greek Pizza and two Gyros.

Finally, a _good_ Gyro! This was pretty damned close to the ones I remember from Athens. If you want a good Gyro, and you're down around San Mateo, this would be the place to go! This was delivered to us, so obviously it was a bit colder than straight off the gyro machine, but it did not seem to lose any flavor.

Oh, and the Pizza was darned good too, if a bit overwhelming (stuff just kept pouring off the pieces as they were lifted from the box). Lots of feta. Apparently Rainbow has a fairly extensive Greek menu. Ray sez he really doesn't need to cook again, since they deliver to his new place.

They're at the Crystal Springs Shopping Center in San Mateo. I've included a link to their menu...
