Excellent Chinese spot in Flushing or NYC Chinatown

Manhattan Outer Boroughs Chinese Queens Taiwanese Sichuan Cantonese Shanghainese

For Monday-before-Christmas lunch next week, we are looking for a lunch spot in Flushing or NYC Chinatown that serves excellent Chinese food. If it is an upscale venue, even better – but it doesn't need to be. All suggestions welcome!

I was disappointed in Hwa Yuan, especially in the Peking duck and the snow pea shoots. They did have a spectacular beef appetizer, though, that would tempt to return and order that and some new dishes. That neighborhood is undergoing something of a Cantonese renaissance, I think (although Hwa Yuan does not bill themselves as Cantonese).

Would you consider Hutong in midtown?

Dumpling Galaxy in Flushing is excellent, and there are quite a few new places in that area that I have not sampled yet.

Too late to respond to this - I tried to but could not log in on mobile for whatever reason - but my favorite Chinese restaurants in Flushing are Guan Fu, an exceptional Sichuan restaurant (I have 15 visits under my belt - the menu changes seasonally), Four Four South Village, a new Taiwanese beef noodle spot, and Chongqing Lao Zao, my favorite hotpot in NYC. Other good second tier places are Szechuan Mountain House, Absolute Sichuan, Niu Pot, Mister Hotpot and Haidilao. Dumping Galaxy can be good, but I find it inconsistent. Oh yeah, Leaf, the Taiwanese spot on the roof of One Fulton Square, has some good stuff too.

Personally I think Hwa Yuan is bad and would never return.

At Hutong I found the dim sum to be good but the other dishes were either not prepared/spiced correctly, were oversweet or just weren't good. For the price, I was seriously disappointed.

Peter what is your favorite dim sum rec? JIng Fong is really the only place I've been to and one place in Flushing but I don't want to go to JF anymore, the food was awful the last time I went. Every dish was cold. I've never had hotpot, I'd like to try.
