I was making a sort of aioli/rouille to go with some fish soup I made tonight and had a near-disaster.

I was running late because I found I didn't have the jarred roasted peppers I'd thought were in the fridge.

Anyway, I just grabbed a jar of Trader Joe's Organic Mayo I'd bought a week or so ago and put it in the blender with some garlic. I added some red peppers I'd hurridly "roasted" on the coils of my electric stove and turnd it on. It got stuck in a mass almost immediately so I added some lemon juice and tried again. No luck. Added a few tablespoons of olive oil and stirred it around and turned on the blender again. The whole thing came apart. Separated into globs of white stuff (I assume the eggs) and oil.

I've added oil and lemon juice to Best Foods many times without this happening. I finally had to put the whole thing aside and make mayo from scratch.

Oh yeah, I remembered Julia's tip about mayo that doesn't come together - to put a dash of dry mustard in and whirr it around again. that's always worked for me, but not here.

Any ideas as to what has caused this?
