Despite its dull name, the Italian Cafe on Sherman (just across the street from Bar Louie) offers fine gelati. The cannoli are equally good - prepared to order, as they should be. The espresso is properly prepared. The barista I spoke to said the boss carefully instructed her in preparing the drinks and is a stickler for quality. I've launched a campaign to get the owner to carry the Neopolitan pastry sfogliatelle (s-foe-lee-a-tell-e) - puff pastry with lemon-ricotta filling.
On the south side of Dempster Street in Skokie, west of 94, the new Dutch Treat ice cream shop's offerings approximate those of the Village Creamery on Oakton. They serve halo-halo and purple yam ice creams, as well as a refreshing mango sorbet.
I've also noticed, but have not yet tried, the Heavenly Sweets shop at 3455 W. Dempster in Skokie.
Has anyone else visited these newly-opened shops?
