Had a great lunch at the European Deli in Ellenville. This is one of my favorite chow haunts. Wonderful Polish home cooking and cold cuts by the pound. I had the kielbasa and sauerkraut plate, a split grilled kielbasa on a bed of the best sauerkraut I've ever had. This stuff is cooked with pieces of yet another kind of sausage ( kabanosy? ) and what seemed to be large pieces of imported mushrooms. Total cost $4.29.
Other lunch specials include grilled chicken cutlet and 4 pierogis, same price. For $6.50 you can try on a Polish plate, the construction worker next to me ordered it, consisting of a piece of kielbasa, sauerkraut,pierogis, and stuffed cabage. It looked to be about 2 lbs of food.
There are only 3 small tables in the place and it gets crowded quickly. The staff is very efficient and friendly and really moves along quickly.
The homemade soups are excellent, I have'nt gotten past the split pea yet, flavored with dill, garlic and sausage. There is a sign on the wall saying they won last years Borscht cookoff, I'll have to try that next. Also, check out the sheeps milk Bryndza cheese, imported but creamy and very fresh, $4.29 per lb.
