I used a GroupOn last night to re-visit this establishment. We had
dined here many years ago - about 9 months after they opened. That
meal was not particularly memorable, all these years later. We
thought we'd give'm another try.
This is an upscale operation, but not fine dining. The owner(?)
circulates in the dining room, but seems to only visit the regulars.
We arrived ~5:50PM. There were 5-6 other tables occupied and a
small, boisterous group at the bar. We were seated promptly.
Service was attentive. Water was delivered swiftly. Drink orders
were filled promptly. We decided to split an order calamari. It was
a tad over-cooked.
The house salad was romaine on a plate. My bride's plate included
two < 1" slivers of red cabbage. Mine? No cabbage. The greens were
fresh and clean ... but just romaine on a plate? Really? Wow, what an
I ordered lake perch. It was served on a bed of sliced and (over)
sauced potatoes w/bean sprouts. The perch was a tad over-cooked.
Probably cooked properly in the pan, but did not allow for continuing to
cook a bit on the plate.
My bride inquired about the "Pacific Pompano" listed as a daily special.
The server's knowledge was limited to:
- Ocean fish
- The description was, "a long and round fish." (Wrong)
- We had to coax her re: cut (filet? steak?) and texture
- Preparation? Clueless.
The Pompano was served over the same bed of sliced & (over)
sauced potatoes. My wife described the Pompano as "well done" ...
I'd say, "just a tad over-cooked"
My bride also ordered a chocolate dessert. The server mentioned that it
is "served with a scoop of ice cream." It is ... and there a $3 charge for the
The GroupOn fine print mentioned that an 18% gratuity being added to the
check ... and it was. Had that detail been disclosed before buying the GroupOn,
I would have passed.
Before the GroupOn, it was $105 w/18% tip. Not worth it. Frankly; It was not
worth the $55 we paid. Ram's Horn has a better house salad and can also
The menu is interesting and quite varied ... but the kitchen failed to live up to the
menu. Darned glad that I did not order the spendy Dover Sole. The server started
off great, but disappointed overall. They should know the menu, the specials and
the preparations. The undisclosed $3 charge for the "comes with" ice cream was
not the last disappointment ..
I paid cash; and when taking it, the server asked, "Do you want change?" It's a fair
question; when the gratuity is not mandatory.
Then there was the matter of the lost/misplaced doggie bag.
Will we return? No.
