Has anyone been able to successfully book Etxebarri anytime recently? I am looking for any advice/tips.
The online system (currently the only way to reserve, according the website) started booking May, June, and July this morning. We've had today on our calendar since last Fall (Extebarri is a bucket list destination for us), and planned ahead with 5 specific dates/times in mind. At 9 a.m. (CST) - the precise moment when reservations became available - the website crashed (no doubt due to traffic). My wife and I refreshed our laptops repeatedly for 2 minutes and finally got it to load.
And...nothing was available. Just a few minutes later. 3 months worth of reservations were entirely booked in less than 5 minutes. To say we were frustrated would be an understatement. Even with very specific preparation, we failed, and I'm not sure we could have done anything more. We immediately jumped onto waiting lists (4 possible dates). I realize there are countless other outstanding options in Basque Country (considering Elkano as a replacement), but it was still disappointing.
Is this level of cutthroat competition typical? I see a number of Spain and Basque trip reports that include Etxebarri, and I'm wondering how people were able to get in.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
