I have been reading the posts on CHOWHOUND.COM for the past 4 years, and this is my first post. I am a NYC and Boston post regular, but I was in Chicago this weekend, and I really enjoyed my dinner at Erwin:
I decided to check out Erwin after reading a few posts on the site. I made the right decision- the service was pleasant. Our server didn't want to become our buddy, but he didn't ignore us either. We were two, and I started with the pyrenees cheese salad, and my partner started with the chicken livers. My salad was good, and I have never had seared cheese before. I wasn't a huge fan of the consistency of the cheese, but the salad under was perfect. The piece of chicken livers I tried was incredible though. I wish my mother could have made chicken livers like that when she used to force my sister and I to eat them once a month when we were younger. The taste of the liver wasn't too overwhelming, but was present. The slight taste of apples and the usual grilled onions worked perfectly with the liver.
For entree, I had the fish special. The fish was not overcooked or undercooked, and it was in a broth with carrots, and other vegetables. I forgot the type of fish, but it was in the sole family, and tastier. They added a little spice which I think was a little bit of red hot pepper. My partner had to confit of chicken, and he loved to combination of the chicken with a few capers they added. We had a bottle of Castle Rock Pinot Noir, which worked well with my fish.
For desert, we shared ice cream sandwhich which was to die for. I love banana cake, and butter pecan ice cream.
Overall, a wonderful experience and I would definitely go again.
And I found the prices solid and not outrageous, no pretention, and delicious food, for this wonderful meal.
