Went to Erte this weekend (13th and University Ave NE Mpls near the Modern Cafe) for a birthday dinner. Although we've been going there for awhile, just wanted to post on it since it has remained consistently good, and we're so happy each time we go, that I thought it would be fun to share our experience and favorites.
A few things had changed since we were there last. They've annexed the space next door to create the "Peacock Lounge" which is an kind of old French-looking faux painted space with a long bar and these dramatic glass doors opening into the dining room. You now actually enter through the bar area, rather than on University Ave as you used to.
I like Erte when we're craving red meat, because they have beautifully trimmed steaks - by which I mean somehow they've taken off all gristle, tissue, etc. The House steak is $17, and is, as aforementioned, well-butchered and trimmed, with great deep steak flavor and a house-made sauce that comes with a little green onion fan to brush it on with. The steak also comes with a salad with house-made dressings -- we highly recommend the blue cheese and spicy (red) French.
We got an organic Arbanta (not sure what that is) Rioja wine for $26 (bottle) which we really enjouyed with the steak -- not hammer-over-the-head-heavy, but spicy and full.
The sides are extra - our favorites right now are the creamed corn and the hash browns. Oh - and before dinner you get bread with herb butter and this charming little dish of olives and marinated chiles and artichokes.
Although the price of The House steak has slowly crept up by a dollar or so a year from the steal of the century $14 when the restaurant first opened, we still enjoy the food and kind service a lot.
