Erich's green chile report for 2005

Bad news, folks. The farm in Lemitar at which I've had good luck in the past had a bad year with curly top, and they've already sold out.

Curly top appears to have been strong this year - have you noticed how rare the places roasting green chile are around town?

After talking to friends and checking a few places (Hi-Lo Market on 4th was actually OUT of chile!), I wound up at the Fruit Basket on 4th (they have 3 locations, I went to the one just S of Osuna). The chile they had in sacks (purportedly from Hatch . . . quien sabe) was pretty variable. I dug around and found myself a nice bag of hot "harvest" chile (about 2/3 green with a lot of red and orange in it) and had them roast it up for us. The guy roasting it knew what he was doing, and we went home and peeled.

A bit of fun this year was that a cousin from NY and his wife were visiting. They got to see the chile roasting, got to help peel, and got to help make and taste both my wife's red (from pods, of course!) and green. They videotaped the whole thing and brought a bunch of red and green back to Long Island with them.

Anyway, sorry I don't have better news. I can't strongly recommend any place this year, but wanted to report where I bought as I promised I would earlier this year. Anyone else want to discuss where they bought and why they chose that place?
