End Of An Era (Cont’d) - Jimmy’s Kitchen, Hong Kong

Charles Yu | Apr 12, 202006:39 PM     2

This restaurant traces its history back to the 1920’s serving celebrities ( Jackie Kennedy! ), movie stars, entrepreneurs and home-sick ex-pats! After 90 years, Jimmy’s still remains one of the city’s most highly renowned culinary institutions. This old school restaurant serves colonial cuisine with hints of British fare and added Hong Kong twist in a nostalgic setting – From the dim lighting, carpet, dark wood furniture and interior, all the way to the music – everything hearkens back to Hong Kong’s good old, colonial days, without the cheesy memorabilia. One is expected to soak in the ambiance and remember what it’s like when things were more laid-back and relaxed.

To say that the menu ‘offers a wide selection’ is doing Jimmy’s Kitchen a disservice. Their take on ‘colonial cuisine’ includes comfort food such as Scottish Oxtail and Barley soup with Sherry, Steak & Kidney pie, Chicken Kiev to various Madras curry, Fish and Chips, Meat and Steak (gorgeous Dutch Steak, age-long Steak Diane!). For desserts, old time favorites like Baked Alaska, Bread Pudding with Custard and English Trifle made choosing a tough decision!

One can get overwhelmed by the choices—you’ll just have to trust your gut to make the right choice.

The following are collection of yummy dishes I had the good fortune to taste before their recent closing! Their splendid tasting Chicken Kiev must be the best such rendition I have ever eaten! Light, crispy and thin breadcrumb crusted chicken, moist and juicy, oozing with generous amount of garlic butter when cut into was so mesmerizingly good, it still lingers in my mind after all these years!
