Alright, we have all had them. This is the place to share (in loving detail) the epic meals (yes, there can be more than one) of your life. It can include, but is not limited to Thanksgiving and Christmas meals, Birthday dinners and Anniversary celebrations, or a simple recount of your first New York dirty water dog when you just landed in the city. Please tell why it was special- was it the setting, the food, the people you shared it with, or something else?
I’ll go first. One of the most epic meals I ever had was in New York with my father. The trip was taken for my 16th birthday, and it was taken around Christmas time. I had many wonderful meals while there, but one of the best I had was at Momofuku Ma Peche. I had never had raw oysters, so we ordered them for an appetizer. They came with lime wedges and a sauce/vinaigrette that was vinegary and wonderful on the oysters. My dad got a picture of my face as I ate my first oyster, and you can tell that I put too much siracha and lime on it, as my face is a little scrunched up. :-) As we were eating, in my dad’s oyster, he found a seed pearl! We told the waitress, and she thought we were crazy. “A pearl?! In an oyster?!” Why, yes. A pearl. In an oyster. At least she kept the water glass filled…. We were able to sit at the bar and talk to the Chef (not David Chang, but he was awesome nonetheless) as we ate. We ordered pork chops, which came with grated turnips and roasted potatoes in a delicious sauce. One serving was enough for two. After talking with us for a while, the chef gave us (free of charge) a serving of Brussels sprouts. I don’t remember ever having them before, and now (largely because of this experience) they are my favorite vegetable. They were roasted I think, and if I remember correctly had dried cranberries and soy sauce on them (among other things). The memory of the savory-sweet combo is making me hungry as I write this…..
This dinner was epic because (most importantly) I spent it with my dad, the food was wonderful, and the setting was cool.
For my 17th birthday, my father had the seed pearl set in a silver locket that is shaped like an oyster, and put on a silver chain. I am wearing it as I write this.
Another one would have to be the first time I made bo ssam. The flavors were amazing, and I couldn’t believe that I had been able to replicate (with competency) a meal that I had wanted to eat so badly. I still make it whenever I can, and it is always worth the time and effort. I know it is one of my mom and dad’s favorite meals, and I always feel so proud and satisfied that I have the ability to make someone so happy with the food I create. The bo ssam is one of the reasons I thought I wanted to be a chef a while back. :-) I like to go back and watch the video that gave me the recipe sometimes, and let the memory of one of my first true recipe successes wash over me. That meal was epic, because the food was amazing (if I don’t say so myself) and it showed me that as long as I pay attention in the kitchen, and start with a good recipe, I can cook just about anything I want to. That was an amazing revelation for me, one I think some people (sadly) never have.
