New England Clam Chowder and Steamers

Looking for really good New England clam chowder and steamers for someone who is homesick for Maine. In this effort, we went to Shore down on Murray Street in Tribeca because it recently had a good review in the NYTimes.

I am sorry to say, it just wasn't up to snuff. The clam chowder was too thick and seemed overloaded with potatoes, just a few pieces of minced up clams. We ordered steamers and while they were tasty, it was expensive-maybe 12 to 15 clams in a portion for $14.00.
The other guests at the table ordered moules/frites and the seasonal soft-shell crabs. Just ho-hum. Not really outstanding preparations of either.

Where in the city can one get good clam chowder or fried clams (bellies-NOT strips)? So far the only place we've found in Svenningsen's on 5th Avenue and 31st street. Any other good places?
