Just thought I'd report on my Valentine's Day dinner at Second Empire. What a great place for a special occasion! I found the staff to be very formal and polite. The house is beautiful, we dined in the area that used to be the cellar. Since the dining areas used to be separate rooms of the house you are somewhat sectioned off, and since there were only 3 other couples near us it felt very private.
There isn't anything extravagant on the menu but I enjoyed the presentation. I had to try the salmon and crab cake in a Newcastle Ale reduction, the reduction turned out very sweet and had a slight Asian-like sesame flavor to it. Their key lime pie was easily the best rendition of this I've ever tasted. Not too sweet and not too tart.
At the end of the meal, I really wanted to walk around the house a little and check out the other dining areas. They also had some interesting photos and pieces of history up on the walls. But I found it funny as we were trying to peek around members of the staff were whizzing all around us, and kept telling us "goodnight" as if to say "it is time for you to leave now." Maybe I'll be able to go back on a regular night when it is not so busy and be able to enjoy it at little longer.
