After a lovely afternoon with the ChowPup and his playgroup at the Queens Hall of Science, I wanted to repay the sweet mom who drove us this time around....so we hit Empanadas Del Parque so I could send her home with a bag of assorted "das" as my babe refers to them.
I've been there quite a few times, in addition to Mama's Empanadas on Northern, the one on Steinway, and even Palacio de las Empanadas across the road; none of the other places even comes close. I'm always taken with how fresh the ingredients are, how expertly they are fried (almost greaseless) and how clean the tiny space is. Today we got about 30 of them- faves include chicken, beef, chicharron, maduro and cheese ( DOUBLE YUM), the egg, cheese, and ham, a stellar caramel with cheese and the pup's fave nutella with banana. The masa ( corn) are my favorite, but the harina ( flour) ones are excellent as well. * the cod and shrimp are always a bit too "fishy" for me- just my .02*
Also very noteworthy are their helados which are frozen in plastic cups with popsicle sticks stuck in. The Ariquipe (caramel) is INSANELY good as is the mango, strawberry, coconut, and rice pudding. They sometimes have soursop and tamarind as well. That Ariquipe is to die for. I might like it even more than Ben Faremo's Peanut Butter ice just up the block. MIGHT. That's a bold statement from me :)
