Empanada Mama report

This is a seemingly new place on 9th between 50th and 52 (I think between 51 & 52, but now I can't remember). They offer wheat and corn flour empanadas, as well as a couple oven baked empanadas; tamales; stuffed corn patties; and a couple other things. I had a wheat empanada with chicken ($2.25) and a corn empanada with vegetables ($1.75). Both were smallish, but nicely crisp and not at all greasy. The sweetness of the corn one was the main flavor there, but that wasn't such a bad thing. The chicken in the wheat one was very finely shredded (kind of like in a Jamaican chicken pattie) with a red tinge and bits of red pepper of some kind. Flavor was enjoyable, not that distinctive, and it was a bit dry. They came with red and green sauces. The red had a bit of zest and vinegary character that I found appealing. Green seemed pretty standard for the kind of slightly creamy-seeming green sauce you see at some Latin places with some dishes. For the wheat ones, they have a nice variety of stuffings, including Polish (kielbasa and saeurkraut), and Viagra (shrimp, crab, and scallops), which despite the silly name sounded like it might be good. It's just a narrow little place with some tables along the wall, but it has a clean, open feel, and something about the vibe there made me want to like it.

They deliver. Phone is 212-698-9008.
