Via Emilia takes a dive?

Joel | Jun 3, 2004 11:16 PM

We just had an awful dinner at Via Emilia (Park Ave. South at 19th). I mean awful, and I don't use the term lightly. I had an inedible "pork chop", a thin (half an inch or less) cut, bony, fatty, and with gristle throughout, then overcooked (though I'm not sure there's anything you could do with a piece of meat like that). After trying to pick it apart and find some meat, I finally gave up. The veal scallopini that my wife ordered might have been OK, but was covered with a layer of melted gruyere-like cheese that completely overwhelmed the veal. When I mentioned to the staff that the pork chop was inedible, someone at the next table overheard and commented that his dinner was also disappointing. We've had fine meals at Via Emilia before - has anyone else had a recent bad meal there? I'd like to know if we were there on the chef's night off, or if they've decided that their location will assure that they'll have a constant clientele, even if they serve food reminiscient of a college dormitory cafeteria.
