Em Bistro: not that special (long-ish)

I was really looking forward to my meal here. I'd heard so many wonderful things about it. We got off to a bad start when our waiter forgot to bring us bread. Finally, when our appetizers came and still no bread I asked him for it. He blamed his helpers, but they had managed to get bread to the tables on either side of us. When he did bring the bread, it was lukewarm and came only with butter, not the butter and eggplant everyone else received.

For appetizers, our mussels were nice but they lentils and sauce they were served with didn't make it into the mussels. It required a lot of dipping. The blue cheese salad was good, but not transcendent. I thought the mac nuts were a little big to put in there.

For entrees the short ribs were good, if not a little unnecessarily fatty. My game hen, was good, if not a little bland. The potatoes on the side were somewhat dry. The peas were again bland. The polenta served with the short ribs was wonderful.

Our rasberry dessert I didn't care for, although my friend liked it.

Our waiter needs to learn about wine. He was instructive enough to tell us that the list reads from light down to very heavy, but he knew nothing of the individual wine tastes. And he brought the wrong bottle at first.

At one point I went to ask the host a question while waiting in line for restroom, but I had to sit and listen to three minutes of him gossipping with the bartender before getting his full attention.

It wasn't a "bad" experience, but given the neighborhood (Pane e Vino, Opaline, Grace), I expected a lot more.
