I recently asked for recommendations for lunch around Elizabeth and was steered towards Elmora Ave (just East of Grand, the extension of North Ave.)
Well, I had lunch at Goodman's Deli (which is now owned by other Greeks than the ones who bought it from Goodman), but it still looks like something from another era with its little counter stools, and the menu has lots of goodies. I tried a corn beef and pastrami sandwich with coleslaw and Russian dressing. It was good but would have been better if I'd gotten there a bit later when the fresh corn beef came out. But the best part was the crisp pickle and the cream soda and the motherly waitresses. Lots of things looked good, and I'll be back. I went directly across the street to the bagel shop, no frills, but good, normal-sized, old-fashioned bagels at reasonable prices.
In the next block there is also a kosher Chinese place that a coleague says is wonderful, and Reuben's kosher diner and one with a sushi bar. There are also lots of Colombian places and a new Tex-Mex across from Goodman's. All in all, it looks like an interesting place to poke around in.
But along North Avenue closer to Routes 1/9, there are some interesting looking Portuguese and Brazilian possibilities. And I have yet to hit the hotdog stands. Thanks for the recs, hounds.
