Elmhurst Thai News

Eric Eto | Aug 7, 2003 01:10 AM

I posted a while ago about a Chinese takeout joint in Elmhurst that was run by Thais. I went by tonight to give them a try and found that they've gone fully Thai and renamed the restaurant Boon Chu (previously known as Broadway Kitchen, even with an awning that says Wing Hing). It's a standard takeout counter with a few tables to sit and eat -- extremely low key. They were still awaiting the printed takeout menus, so all they had was the one copy on the counter. The family running the place couldn't be friendlier. The sausage appetizer is pretty killer, the squid salad is very good (can I complain that there was too much squid and not enough salad?), but the crispy pork with chili and basil was merely OK (by Sripraphai standards). The good news is that these guys aren't afraid to pile up on the spice. Spicy means spicy. As I was waiting for my order and chatting up one of the owners, I was watching the chef/matron cook up my order, and I noticed she put a lot of chili paste and flakes into the ladle just before it hit the wok. A few seconds later, it was as if the place was hit with tear gas. I had to get outside to catch my breath and stop tearing. I knew that was a good sign.

Other Thai news: MEAL Thai seems to have changed hands, or at least it has changed it name to Begin Thai. The new menu doesn't look as complicated as the previous one, but I'll reserve judgment until I've given them a try.
