Looks like the So. CT CH board is almost as desolate as Boston's these days. We were very happy, on our brief yearly visit to New Haven, to have dinner at Elm City Social Club, just off Chapel on College St. WHAT'S UNUSUAL ABOUT ELM CITY SOCIAL is that the food is very generously portioned and low priced while the chefs obviously care about high quality in all its aspects. We ordered way too many dishes because "we just couldn't say 'no' " and we wanted to try so many things, so we ended up with multiple doggy bags, which came back w/ us for dinners at home in boston. Highlights were the lump crab cakes; the octopus (ask for saute so you won't get the over-char which we had before returning it); zucchini chips; duck sliders; and, the fabulous fried duck skins (As fabulous as this was, I think it would be better slow- roasted than fried.). The chips and dip was boring. The quinoa salad and beet salad both needed more zing but were a great idea. The back room is conversation-friendly compared with the hugely loud bar!
The staff and crowd are young; more-experienced servers would be helpful.
I hope the chef will still be there when we return next year and I hope other diners will pile on the kudos that are so well deserved.
