Elite Chef Review

Hey NY Chowhounds,

I just had the privilege of spending a week with a elderly friend in Flushing who has her finger on the pulse of the restaurant scene. I gained 8 pounds in 7 days, and I thought I would share my reviews with you guys.

We started the week at Elite Chef in Fresh Meadows. This is a restaurant that just recently came under new management. We had Sharks Fin Soup, Peking Duck, this great fish dish that uses the bulb of the water lily and isn't on the menu, Chinese Broccoli with Taiwanese sausage - also not the menu, and Spicy Shrimp.

Although the Peking Duck was more a cantonese duck served Peking Duck style, it was still good. They used the less sweet hoisin sauce rather than the Tianmian Jiang sauce and the duck wasn't prepared on site, but the skin wasn't greasy and was crispier than most establishments get it. The Sharks Fin Soup was excellent, rich and flavorful, and that fish dish with the water lily bulb (my friend called it Bai He Yu) was subtle and very flavorful - I've never had anything like it. The Chinese Broccoli with Taiwanese sausage wasn't salty, and had wonderful smoky flavor. And, while the Spicy Shrimp was just a tad too sweet for my palate, it was still good.

I think the restaurant is worth driving out to Fresh Meadows for. I've got the full review with pictures up on my site, but since we've doing a lot of content, you have to dig back to June 9th or 10th.
