Elite Cafe - Brunch

Mari | Mar 5, 200608:53 PM

I was at the newly opened Elite Cafe on Fillmore St. for brunch this morning. I think this is the best brunch I have had in a while.

Three friends and I showed up at around 1pm. The wait was approximately 45 minutes. I am not sure if they take reservations since we just walked in. My friend had a bloody mary while we waited, and it wasn't up there with the version from Dalva, but it was pretty good.

We started off with the sugar and cinnamon coated donut holes. A fairly decent sized ramekin was stuffed with itty bitty donut holes - so precious but so good! They were still hot when we got them. We also splurged on 2 beignets ($2.50 each) that were also a hit at the table. 1 beignet is enough for two people to share, unless you love them and need more than one. They were not at all greasy and the dough was perfect. I also ordered a Meetinghouse biscuit since I fondly remember the Meetinghouse on California St. (now Quince). The biscuits are served orange honey butter.

The menu is huge and there was a decent selection of cajun/creole, non-cajun and sweets to satisfy anyone. I ordered the chicken-apple, fontina and caramelized red onion omelette. This is was the best omelette I have had in ages. However, if you like a runnier version then let the waiter know since it was pretty well done. It was served with potatoes and 2 slices of sourdough, but I substituted an ordered of grits with cheese. These were also amazingly good. I have rarely found grits in SF, but these were great. They weren't the soupy version that you get at a place like the Cracker Barrel. The sharp cheddar that was mixed in gave them a wonderful edge - I might go to the bar just to have an order of grits.

My other friends also ordered omelettes and one other ordered the cornmeal pancakes. I found the pancakes a bit dry and I like Kate's Kitchen's version instead.

The coffee was also good - an important element in my brunch experiences. Since I didn't pay, I am not sure what the bill came to. I am curious to know if anyone has gone for dinner or for the bar food. I am definitely heading back there soon!!
