El Volcan blew onto the Salinas taco truck scene a couple years ago with the most flamboyantly painted, biggest, baddest high profile truck and an attitude to match. It has since expanded with additional trucks posted in Monterey and Watsonville.
I tried it a couple times this summer. The tortillas for tacos etc. are handmade to order. Squeeze bottles of salsa and other condiments let you add your own. I tried one each of lengua and barbacoa. The lengua was firmish and the barbacoa was too chewy. The tacos were nicely dressed with white onion and cilantro, and served up with a lemon wedge and some braised onion.
The Volcanica burger adds a slice of ham, bacon, pineapple, cheese, jalapeño chile, lettuce, tomato and onion to a grilled-to-order beef patty. So much going on, the beef itself was almost extraneous.
The Salinas truck is located a few steps away from Der Wienerschnintzel on E. Alisal St between N. Hebbron and Filice streets.
