el tapatio (on ashland)

michael | Jul 14, 200509:38 AM

has any been here recently? is it (at least) reasonably good? any thoughts or reviews would be appreciated.

i'm thinking of taking a vegetarian out-of-town guest here this evening and while i recognize there are probably dozens (if not more) of superior options, i'm looking for something we can WALK to. we live in roscoe village/st. bens.

we're not looking for high end fare. and i didn't want to take him to a taqueria, per se. i do hope he would leave reasonably impressed with the food. but when it comes to making choices that will provide superior chow that will send guests home happy, i tend to get overwhelmed, having only lived in Chicago for 9 months. there's just soooo much.

still. with all this city has to offer, i'd like to impress. at least something above average or solid. what a drag to think he'd be on the plane home thinking "that mexican place sucked."

will el tapatio at least satisfy? again, it doesn't have to be one of the "best" the city has to offer. we're on short notice here. but any assurances or warnings (or suggestions) would be welcome.

he's vegetarian.
and walking distance (we don't mind a good longish walk) is key.

thanks kindly!
