After an outstanding meal at Taqueria Poblano in Arlington tonight (outstanding crab meat quesodilla, exemplery hand made from scratch margueritas, killer dessert of fudge filled fried dough balls with vanilla ice cream (!!) ) we happen to drive by El Ranchero on Wilson Boulevard, south of Ballston. We've been driving by this for several years, almost every time saying that we'll come back and try it. IT HAS THAT LOOK ABOUT IT, the look that says, "we're special and worth the trip." At 8:30PM both dining rooms were filled with several people standing in the cold waiting to get in.
Has anyone ever been? I've searched Chowhound and found a number of posts from people (AnCym?) saying they were going (Terrie?). But I haven't found anyone who really went into any details on their opinions or specifically compared it to Taqueria Poblano or Guajillo (which I still give the edge to based on my last meal of almost a year ago; part of the reason is the funky, dark ambience which really does feel like Juarez or Tiajuana). Flavrmeistr, have you been?
