El Mercado in East Los Angeles

Hugh Lipton | Feb 16, 2004 02:51 PM

Was on my way home from La Jolla today and decided to stop and pick up some Mexican food products at El Mercado. Stayed for an early lunch (11:15). Upstairs where the mariachis play 7 days a week was not open yet (drat no beer). Wife and I went downstairs for tacos asada and al pastor. $1.50 per taco (beans and rice are extra). This may still be the best Mexican food outside of Guadalajara. A true Mexican challenge to the Farmer's Market. I have had the tortas there before and also the pozole and menudo. Although you can't get beer on the food court level I think the food is better than upstairs.
Try it I think you'll like it. 1st Street between Indiana and Evergreen. Parking in the back with security guards watching your car.
