I went to El Huipil with a friend on Friday night........great meal!! We started with guac & chips, which were really crispy and fresh, and the guac was chunky and mildly spiced. They served it with green chile salsa as well. Then, we were curious about the cactus salad taco. Thank god we were, 'cause it was truly amazing....could've eaten a bunch of them (the onion and cilatro were just right-on). Then I ordered the chicken enchiladas with mole and friend had pork with pumpkin seed sauce. The mole was spicy, not sweet (like Tacos Nuevos Mexico), and purely delicious! I tend to judge Mexican places by certain dishes, and mole is one of them. The pumpkin seed sauce was good tasting, as was the soft pork, and obviously fresh, but lacked a certain kick. Rice & beans were great as well. Then, I decided to ask if they had flan, as it wasn't on the menu. The waiter (possibly the son?) said he didn't think so, and went to check. Turned out they had it and it was made that morning. WOW is all I can say.......it wasn't the typical circular flan either, it was cut as a slice of a cake, a big slice, and had 2 layers. The top was light custard flan and the bottom was more of a heavier, eggier, thick custard.......with a really great caramel sauce. It ended the meal perfectly. OH, BTW, it's a great looking place as well, very put together in a casual way, with probably 5-6 tables in the front and 2 in the back. Go there!!! I'm going back for sure. 116A Sullivan Street in Red Hook, between Conover and Van Brunt.
