i aimed for EL GUATON today because i wanted to try the beef/avocado chacarero and lomito completo sandwiches but arrgh they are all closed up. supposedly for renovations but it does not look good. im prob way late on the scene about that but i was disappointed. not for long....
so i ended up at SRI. last visit i tried the kang som sour curry w/ veg and shrimp and really liked it. so this time i got a variation, kang som sour curry with shrimp and cha-om omlet. i liked this even better.
the omlet pieces had some green veg inside the egg and it was a nice foil to the spicy fishy curry. the half peeled shrimps were fresh and fine too, but not necessary as the omlet carried the curry so well($7).
this is a great dish and a nice change from the usual and more typical red/green/masaman/panang/jungle curry choices. i even think its best for brunch, too bad SRI does not open until 11:30am i could eat this earlier.
funny thing, i got a lot of nods and checks from the staff and the nice lady that owns the place even came over to make sure i ordered ok. she explained some dont like this dish because it has a somewhat sour fishy base but in fact its just delicious. i also brought in a beer and had steamed rice for sides.
of course you have to look at all the counter goodies while you're waiting and eating at SRIPRAPHAI. i bought the banana rice dessert and a sausage/cilantro/lettuce tub for the road. both are very very tasty items. i'm so happy SRI remains such a knockout wow of a restaurant!
ps--on the back kitchen wall i saw a recruitment notice flyer for the HIGHLINE restaurant in the meatpacking district. i hope they dont steal the SRI staff!
