El Economico in Kingsbridge (Bronx) - cheap, filling and tasty Dominican

Saw Robert Sietsema give this place the thumbs up in the VV's on-line listings and it's a five-minute drive from my apt. in Yonkers, so I figured I'd give this place a try.

Started out with a small sancocho - it had large pieces of chicken on the bone and yuca in it. Very hearty - for someone getting over a bad head cold, it really hit the spot.

Finished up with a plate of pernil (roast park) with yellow rice and beans. The meat salty, garlicky and tender, and the skin was crunchy, fatty and delicious. The rice and beans were nothing special.

For all this, I paid $8.50 - pretty good for a lot of food.

There's nothing fancy about this place - a lunch counter with a few tables upstairs. But for anyone looking for an alternative to El Malecon - which is basically across the street - this place is definitely worth checking out. They also had some roast chickens and other stews in a steam table that looked pretty good as well.
