Recently I asked about the El Caches taco truck, http://www.chowhound.com/topics/424870 , and with no firsthand reports, ended up trying it myself Saturday in Santa Rosa at the Vets. I’ve actually had El Caches’ tamales a long time ago, when it used to sell them from a table in front of the Santa Rosa Grocery Outlet. Then El Caches graduated to a tamale cart at the Windsor farmers market, and now it operates a full blown catering truck.

I tried one of the items on the specials board, mahi-mahi taco, $3. Available soft or crunchy, I decided to give crunchy a whirl since the fish filet is grilled and I could indulge in the frying calories.

The thick piece of grilled mahi-mahi was firm and meaty, albeit a bit on the dry side as I often find this fish. It was garnished with shredded iceberg lettuce, chopped ripe tomatoes, red salsa (I’d asked for “hot”), a dusting of grated cotija cheese, and some crema. While crackly and crunchy around the edges, the corn tortilla was too tough toward the middle. Other than that, I liked everything about this taco. That said, at the Santa Rosa market, I’d rather pay a buck more and have one from the Drakes Bay booth.

El Caches also sells its organic green or red salsas. I confirmed that the red salsa on my taco is the same as sold in the jar. It is more than medium-hot, enough to make me wish I’d purchased a cold drink before starting to eat. It was a bit watery from the tomato but a delicious accompaniment nonetheless.
