El Bulli advise

Just a quick suggestion for those going to El Bulli this year. I had the pleasure of going last year (June 2002). We stayed in Cadaques, which is the next town north of El Bulli (outside of Roses). It is a small town on the Mediterranean set in a deep bay. We took the train from Barcelona to Figures, and then took a cab to Cadaques. We stayed in a hotel for two nights there.

There is a small restaurant there - Casa Anita - which fills up when they open (about 8:00 pm) - no reservations taken. We had a blast our first night. Food was basic, but quite good - you pretty much eat what they feel is best for the day; we had grilled prawns, stuffed squid, cod, and a couple of amazing desserts- but it was the atmosphere which made it truly memorable. The owner (late 30's early 40's) goes around making sure everyone is having a great time, his wife cooks. He will promptly ensure that you are having your fill of there house wine. He also has a dessert wine, which he pours into your mouth from 6 feet. As you can imagine, not the most elegant atmosphere, but a good taste of a local restaurant that IS Cadaques. One word of advice, show more moderation than we did, though. We recovered by our hotel pool the entire next day, and were fine just in time for El Bulli the next evening. It makes the tortuous road to El Bulli that much easier to take.

There are two taxi drivers in Cadeques. The one we had was a very nice gentleman in his 60's. We both spoke a little French, so that was how we communicated. Reserve with the hotel ahead of time if you want one to drive you to El Bulli. He will drive you there, and sits in his cab for 4 hours sleeping while you have one of the best meals of your life. The taxi was about 90 euros for the return trip. Heck, its 6 hours of the guy’s time! Other option is renting a car in Figures.

There is one other post on Cadaques from 2 years ago, where we got the idea on Casa Anita. Just do a chowhound “search” for it. Have a GREAT time all that are going!!
