tried the egg custard tarts from Honolulu Cafe & Bakery (888 Stockton St -SF) yesterday. they are not kept warm like the ones at Golden Gate Bakery (the gold standard) but they only cost 50 cents or so ... I bought a variety of things so I'm not absolutely sure of the cost. As you can see in the photo, the shell is quite rich- almost sandy (lard) but not as flaky and light as GGB but the filling is spot on: excellent texture and flavor. I didn't eat one until I got home so maybe the shell suffered a bit in transit?
All in all - pretty good and especially when the price is considered. So, Golden Gate Bakery still rules but who is number two?
