Edible vietnamese without going to the 'burbs?

I admit I haven't gone through all of the archives on this one, but a brief scan reveals that there haven't been many suggestions here for good Vietnamese restaurants outside of the Westminster/San Gabriel/Rosemead direction. Does anyone know of anything good that's more central (hollywood, downtown, west side, etc)? (The 2-3 places I've tried in Chinatown have been quite weak in my view; I can't remember their names but they are listed in Jonathan Gold's book. I have also tried a couple in K-town without success.) Personally, I am more into the non-pho side of Vietnamese food (e.g., the "bun" noodle bowls). Seems like an odd culinary gap.
