Economics of High Fructose Corn Syrup vs. Cane Sugar in Soda

Dave Feldman | Jan 10, 201508:52 PM

Let us live in a fantasy world where Coca-Cola decides to dump HFCS for cane sugar in its signature soft drink. Boutique sodas that use cane sugar charge quite a bit for the privilege, while Coke fans seek out Mexican or kosher versions and pay up, as well.

Do any Chowhounds have an idea how much more Coca-Cola would have to charge to maintain its profit margin? It has always struck me that marketing non-HFCS soda as a healthier option is misdirected. No one drinks soda for its health benefits; but folks are willing to pay up for better taste. Would there really be no market for such a product from Coke or Pepsi?
