Back to Sacramento in March, my friends joined me for dinner at Eatuscany Caffe in Sacramento's Midtown.
On this warm evening, we took a seat outside at a sidewalk table.
My friend ordered the pasta of the day, gnocchi with cream sauce. Looked and smelled scrumptious . . . too bad I neglected to claim a bite.
I ordered the lasagna pesto. This had all the markings of being reheated too many times. The top layer was bitter and blackened, besides being stiff as a board. The interior was so dry and unevenly warmed with some cold spots. Then the bottom of the plate had a puddle of béchamel. Hard to believe that these plates came from the same kitchen.
But this just made me more eager for dessert. I went back inside to study the case. I almost got the sfogliatelle and will have to return for this some day.
However, the display of gelato swayed my decision. I sampled a few flavors, and they're as good as they look.
This cup of pistachio gelato and lemon sorbet saved the evening. Great texture, deep flavors, well-balanced sweetness. . . excellent job.
