No meandering on this jaunt. It was a purposeful drive up Route 95N to the new Market Basket in South Attleborough.
This was my first time shopping at a Market Basket. At 10:30 am on the Friday of Labor Day weekend, the store was busy but not overly crowded. Having read so much about Market Basket on the Boston Board, I wanted to just wander and check it out. It was easy getting up and down the aisles and I hit every one.
I decided to focus on a few brand-named items that I usually buy: Hellmann's mayonnaise, Bell and Evans chicken, Polar seltzers, Ocelo sponges. They were all available and were less expensive than at Shaw's and Dave's, my usual markets in Rhode Island. Some items on sale were virtual bargains; for example, Brigham's ice cream was two quarts for $5.00. I didn't buy any produce as I am still frequenting farmers' markets but i did note fruits and vegetables from local farms.
Not sure how I feel about my experience as I can't judge the store after just one visit. It was great getting brand names for less but I am not sure how to go about choosing Market Basket brands or brands I am not familiar with. I did buy one Market Basket brand item, plastic snack bags, and found them to be thinner and less sturdy than Ziploc
With generally low prices and a huge inventory I can see why Market Basket is popular. South Attleboro, however, isn't in my neighborhood so I won't be stopping by to pick up just a few items. But I am glad it is within easy reach when I decide on another purposeful drive.
And, I will continue to patronize Shaw's and Dave's as they are my local markets.
