All you can eat sushi gone wrong

Just wanted to post a warning about a place I went to with my girlfriend this past weekend. I can't remember the exact name (I hate that), but it's on 7th Ave South and Bleecker, across from Lemon Grass Grill and Caliente Cab Co. (Lemon Grass Grill is not bad, by the way.) Anyway, it's all the sushi you can eat, $17.95. It used to be enough to entice us to starve ourselves for a day and try to get our money's worth that night, but we stopped going there about a year ago. Well, when we returned, I think they must have been punishing us for it, because the sushi was terrible. Now, being from California, I've had fresh and expertly prepared sushi (not that being from California is a requirement for that, that's just where I've had it), but I'm not so picky that I can't enjoy a meal of average sushi or sashimi. This, however, was quite poor.

After we placed our first order, we waited for twenty minutes before we finally got it, which seemed like a lot, since there were maybe two other couples in the restaurant. The spicy tuna was okay, but the rest was mediocre at best, and a little warmer than I'd like it. Undeterred, we placed a second order. This was, by far, the worst single plate of sushi I have ever had. The tuna was pale and dry, the tamago was limp and soggy, and, worst of all, the barbequed eel had the texture of chewy wood, and after chewing it for some time, my gag reflexes kicked in, and I never really finished it.

Anyway, that was that. I don't like writing negative things, especially about a place that I used to patronize semi-regularly, but the staff there didn't really seem too concerned with the quality of the food.

On that note, can anyone here recommend a good all-you-can-eat sushi place in or around the city? I don't know how common they are around here. And, while I'm asking, how about some real fresh sushi? Help with this would be appreciated. Thanks.
