I usually try to take note of everywhere I eat, in case it's good and I want to go back, but this time I failed. Last year around this time, I had a temporary job in the Ft. Lauderdale area that involved driving around a lot, to unfamiliar parts of town (I'm from South Miami originally). I ended up having lunch at the best soul food place one day, and it was amazing. Tender short ribs, mac and cheese, collard greens, the best potato salad, and they had a wide variety of (mostly fruit-flavored) sodas I had never seen elsewhere. It was cheap, and awesome. Friendly place, very small, extremely casual, inside a strip mall along a busy road. I have no clue where I was, and I live far from there now, but I loved it.
That same week, I found myself in a strongly Jamaican part of town, and I stopped in at an ancient shopping mall that looked like it hadn't been updated much since the 1970s. I walked around a bit, and then stopped at a place that advertised really great Jamaican patties. They were absolutely wonderful. I'm pretty sure "Patties" was in the name of the place, but not convinced. That mall alone had a handful of different Jamaiacan restaurants, and I only wish I could have tried something from all of them. Does this jog anyone's memory? Where was I, exactly, and where did I eat? If anyone lives nearby, I highly recommend that place in particular, and that whole area if you want what I'm sure is excellent (and authentic, and cheap) Jamaican food.
