Ten years ago there were a number of discussions about non-chain places to eat close enough to I-95 to be realistic options. There have been few discussions since then, even though I-95 is as crowded as ever. Moreso. To bet the ball rolling, I recently had a pretty detailed post at johntannersbbqblog (link in my profile) that gets you south from DC through Georgia. I have been to all of the places mentioned fairly recently (except one recommended by a reliable friend), and each one is good -- some are great. All are local barbecue places, although most offer other local foods as well. It really would be good to identify and publicize other options in that stretch, as well as in the Northeast and once you get into Florida.
