Help with where to eat out near W 55th/Broadway/7th Ave

adri57 | Jun 8, 201710:18 AM     21

We'll be staying in NY for 9 nights at the Dream Midtown hotel in July and would appreciate some tips about where to eat out, preferably nearby but even somewhere reasonably reachable by metro. What we'd really like would be particular places - not just good food - but the food must ideally be anything typically New York or American. Last time, a few years ago, we tried Ellen's Stardust, which we enjoyed, although the food was mediocre and quite frankly, it was quite a rip-off, catering only to tourists. We enjoyed Hill Country BBQ too. We also went to Katz deli to eat the pastrami sandwich and this is probably the place that we felt represented New York the best. Even a good diner or deli would be great. Our budget is around max $30 per person before alcohol.
Thanks for any suggestions! Last trip was made memorable by the tips we were given by Chowhounders!
